More vacation posts! Just a little bit late – this is from last summer.
We spent a day exploring the Vatican when we were in Rome. It was incredible. I have never seen anything quite as impressive. We did a tour – which meant we got in St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel without having to wait in line (which can sometimes be a 7 hour wait) and it was cheaper too!
Interesting unverified fact someone told me: St Peter’s Basilica, etc. is uninsured because it is priceless and no insurance company will insure it.
View of St Peter’s Basilica front on:
On either side are these awesome columns in front of buildings:
This is a dead Pope:
A statue of St Peter – pilgrims are suppose to touch or kiss his feet:
St Peter’s tomb is underneath this:
Throughout the Basilica there are areas to pray:
Everywhere you looks there is something spectacular and old:
[The painting is spectacular, I am old]
Post Basilica we headed to the Sistine Chapel. The walk was beautiful.
There is no flash allowed in the chapel (or anywhere else) so the pictures are dark.
The Sistine Chapel:
Michelangelo’s ceiling – I can’t even imagine how he did this:
Tim, taking it all in:
Next up: Athens, Greece!

Oooh I am going to be there in 2 months! Eeei! So I guess we should pay for a tour when we visit the Vatican? Noted!
Thank you for posting these, Tash! They brought back memories of visiting the Vatican with my family when I was a girl (before the Sistine Chapel was restored but after the Pieta was vandalized).
Is the Throne of St. Peter by Bernini? I seem to remember that from my art history classes.
Glorious pics. Thanks again.
I love seeing these posts, I’ve managed to visit a big chunk of Europe vicariously through you!
Love the expression on the random girl’s face in the very last picture you have of “Tim, taking it all in.” she looks like she’s in complete awe.
Yessssssssss! I’ve been anxiously awaiting when you’d post more about your trip!!!!
What an amazing beauty that must have been!
Wow Tash, Thanks for posting- what an experience!! Pics are fantastic!
Yay! Glad the travel posts have returned!!
The day we went to the Vatican is was SO INCREDIBLY HOT. I was dying in the outfit I had to wear because of having to be covered. But it was completely worth every moment.
W.O.W.
So gorgeous. I’m so happy (and jealous) that you got to experience all of these things close up.
And you are SO cute! Love the pics!
