Tim is incredibly busy with work and call and he has a big exam next week. So he is super stressed and wanted to indulge a craving he was having . . . for hot dogs! Crazy right? And since our BBQ is out of service at the moment, he wanted boiled hot dogs.
We hopped in the car and headed to the grocery store. We first checked out the veggie meats. Not because we are vegetarians, but because we often eat vegetarian meats. Neither or us had ever had a veggie hotdog, so Tim wanted to try them. I was worried they wouldn’t fulfill his hot dog craving, so I wanted him to real “real” hot dogs. As “real” as hot dogs can get . . . so he decided that he wanted to do a hot dog tasting to see which one was the best.
While picking up some beef hot dogs, he spotted some chicken hot dogs he wanted to try.
Yes, we got THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOTDOGS. And since we never eat hot dogs, I am finding this a bit crazy (but fun).
Here are the dogs: Beef, chicken and veggie
I boiled them up. Can you believe that I have never cooked hot dogs in a pot before? I had no idea what to do!
Can you tell which is which?
[The top 2 are veggie, the meddle 3 are beef and the bottom 2 are chicken]
And here they are all coked up ready for Tim to taste. [Side note: The veggie dogs do not float in water.]
[Left are beef, middle are chicken and right are vegan]
No pics from the actual eating, but I do have Tim’s review (and mine). Keep in mind, I knew which was which.
He tried the veggie dog first, and he knew immediately what it was because “it had a funny after-taste”, but he was really impressed with the texture. I also tried that one first and liked it.
We then switched to chicken – and he liked this one best. So did I. The beef just didn’t taste as good or look as good. In fact, he knew which was beef just by the look of it.
After all 3 were tasted, Tim had more veggie dog, and decided he didn’t like them after all. But I think that was because he had just had the chicken and beef. I think that if we only had the veggie dogs, he would have eaten them. With some BBQ sauce and cooked on the BBQ I bet you would never know they were veggie dogs.
So that concluded our hot dog taste test. We learned . . . nothing. And probably won’t eat hot dogs again for a long time.
Plus, I only like rounded hot dog buns:
And Tim only likes “side split” (his name for them) hot dog buns:
So we got both.
And now we have a million hot dogs and 2 packs of buns. Great.

Ha ha ha ha. (I’m laughing at your conclusion).
We like the Kosher Beef hot dogs. They’re really good. A nice change from the turkey dogs I ate for years.
I love your hot dog tasting. Kind of like a wine tasting but not as pretentious.
This is a funny post! I never even think about hot dogs..until I am at our golf course and they have these amazing ones there that are cooked fresh on those roller machine things…
covered with relish, pickles, onions…yummmmmm….
Love it! “The Shopping Bags” did a segment on veggie dogs once at a baseball field and the majority of fans voted for PC brand being the best. As someone who has eaten a lot of different veggie dogs, I agree. I’ve only boiled veggie dogs once (the texture just wasn’t right because it didn’t have the chewy casing) but with bbq sauce cooked on the bbq or George Foreman – delish!
I prefer chicken weiners too…even though I may only buy one or two packages a year these days…lol.
Sounds like it was a fun experiment
First, you two are HILARIOUS. LOL.
Second, I always buy chicken dogs! SO much better than beef dogs IMO. I love eating grilled hot dogs in the summer. One of my favourite things ever!!
That is hilarious! I will sometimes crave boiled hotdogs.
LOVE the hotdog review experiment!!
LOL, love this post Tash. You’re so cute.
I can’t remember the last time I had a hot dog, probably a few years now. I love them BBQ’d though.
