I knew I needed to get out and enjoy some of this beautiful weather we have been having.
The husband and I went to Point Pleasant Park for a run. We did 3k in 19.5 minutes. I am so out of shape! The last .5 k was really hard! It reminded me I need to get back onto my game and start running 3 times a week. I haven’t ran in so long!
I am having a hard time with my breathing. I focus on belly breathing, but still mess up somehow and end up doing it wrong and getting really out of breath. The breathing is what is holding me back the most right now. But I know it just needs practice so I am going to try to get as much practice in as I can!
Night!

I used to – well, I kind of still do at times – struggle with breathing when I run. I don’t know if it’s a good idea at all, but this works for me most of the time: I inhale (with my nose) for 2 ‘steps’ and exhale for 3. and I don’t let myself get big ‘gulps’ of air, I stick to counting, in, in, out, out, out… throughout…
Again, I totally made this up and it might be a bad thing to do (I’m no doctor or specialist…:) but it really works for me, it kind of keeps my breathing ‘in control’ and I find I am able to run for longer when I do it…
Hope this helps!
Good work on going out and running the 3k!!
and thanks for your sweet comment on my blog
I was thinking that now that the nicer weather is here I really should focus on trying to get some of my running outside.
I think I’m going to aim for just 3km and run it as 5:1′s.
If there’s an evening that you would like to try to do it together, let me know.
I won’t be able to chat, but if we agree on our pace I bet we could get better together.
I have the *exact* same problem with breathing – the Belly Breathing instruction on the Booty Camp video did help BUT I read somewhere about pursing your lips when you blow out
I find when I do that it really helps on the exhale, and concentrating on getting that belly button to the back of your ribs, that way your lungs can fully fill up again.
It’s hard to time when running, but take it slow.
And honestly, the pursed lips DOES help the exhale!
good workout! I’m in the same (time) boat as you. It’s nice to know someone else is out there struggling and has about the same pace as me haha
I developed asthma in my late teens, is it possible that you might have developed it too? Also, (at least around here) the allergens multiplied by about 1 million. It could be that all the fuzz in the air and the reaction your body is having to it is causing you to slow down. I know it definitely affected me.
3K in 20 mins is absolutely fantastic Tash! Honestly
But if you’re having a hard time with the breathing, slow down and it should help a lot.
I would still love to run together, doesn’t have to be a long distance either.
I agree a 20 min 3k is nothing to sneeze at! Great job lady!
Did you get the chance to get to yoga yet? I wonder if it would help with breathing?
Great Run Tash! I’m going to start my outside running tomorrow (well maybe Thursday because we are suppose to get lots of rain tomorrow) and I’d love to be able to run 3 km in 20 mins outside.
Good for you
I struggle with my breathing sometimes too. It’s getting better all the time and I’m sure it will for you too.
